Dear All,
Welcome to worship. As we contemplate the easing of restrictions, we are faced with decisions we have not had to take for a few months. As we prepare for worship may we remember God is still with us at home in our communities and in our world.

Still your minds, breathe deeply and prepare to worship God.

PSALM 13: vv. 5,6
But I trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.
NRSV

HYMN: 224: In the cross of Christ I glory
tune: All for Jesus, with full verse intro.

1 In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o'er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.

2 When the woes of life o'ertake me,
hopes deceive, and fears annoy,
never shall the cross forsake me.
Lo! it glows with peace and joy.

3 When the sun of bliss is beaming
light and love upon my way,
from the cross the radiance streaming
adds more luster to the day.

4 Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,
by the cross are sanctified;
peace is there that knows no measure,
joys that through all time abide.

5 In the cross of Christ I glory,
towering o'er the wrecks of time;
all the light of sacred story
gathers round its head sublime.

PRAYER

Think of something that has lifted your spirits this week
Pause and give thanks

Think of someone that has contacted you this week
Pause and give thanks

Think of someone who has served you this week
Pause and give thanks

God has been with us this week
Pause and give thanks

Gracious God
In this house, at this time, we set aside this space to worship you.
Bless this space, bless this house, bless this time.

In our creation and growth,
In the providence of God's care,
In the promise of eternal love,
The creator has given us gifts beyond measure
Thanks be to God.

In the guidance of his teaching,
In the example of his life,
In his own life freely given on the cross
The Son has given his gifts to us.
Thanks be to God.

In our birth into faith,
In giving comfort and strength,
In leading us into all truth,
The Spirit has given us gifts for our living.
Thanks be to God. ✦1

So God, we come now to offer this time to you, Creator, Son and Spirit.

In whose name we pray:-

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen

Romans 6: 12 - 23

Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.

20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Matthew 10: 40 - 42

"Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."

REFLECTION

We have probably all seen the stereotypical 'sandwich board man' carrying a message 'The wages of sin is death; I even think you can get postcards of a photograph of such a person! But if ever a Biblical quotation was taken out of context it is this one! The full quote should be 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord'.

As a teenager I went to a camp with a Christian organisation and on it were some people who had been the year before. On that occasion one of the leaders had wrapped up a few books and at the evening session had said 'I have a free gift here for anyone who would like it'. There were no takers at the first offering (very polite young ladies!) but at the second time of asking one of my now fellow campers got up and said, 'If it is really free, and I don't have to do extra chores I will take it'. Apparently that was the first time the 'gimmick' had had such a response.
Polite girls, or not, we seem to be programmed into thinking 'there is no such thing as a free lunch'.
I also worked in my college vacations in a factory making paper bags. One machine churned out small bags with 'Free Gift from 'Woman's Own' or 'Free Gift from 'Women's Realm'. Of course you had to buy the magazine for the 'free gift' - and I alerted my mother and her friends as to what offers were coming up in the autumn. The plastic contents were sometimes useful but mostly it was a marketing ploy by the publishers. 'There is no such thing as a free lunch'.

Perhaps that is why the message of the gospel is so hard for so many people. 'What's the catch? 'What do I have to do - be good?' I would but I can't give up ...' Of course, there is some sympathy for that sort of view - the expectation is that the response to this free gift of God is that the life of discipleship will follow and, if you have been following these weekly reflections, last week we were reminded of the cost of that discipleship. Is God's free gift so free after all?

However, if we read the verse in the wider context of its setting, the letter to the Roman church, we get a different complexion on it again. Paul is talking about the choices we make in life and the consequences of those choices. Whatever choice we make, especially in how we behave and decide to live our lives, has consequences.

We realise, or at least most of us do, that making unwise choices will lead to potentially serious consequences. We don't go around taking things that are other peoples', because that will land us up in trouble with the law. If we break the speed limit we know that there is a chance we might get caught and have a fine and maybe points on our licence, or there could be even more drastic consequences if our speeding leads to an accident. Most of us think through our actions and can work out the consequences. Paul is pointing out that our behaviours and attitudes also have far reaching consequences which gives us the wage of being enslaved by a system which takes everything without giving back anything. A slavery, a bondage to what we call sin. It is the way in which the world we inhabit organises things. The world is about power, greed, self-centredness and to try to fight against it on our own leads to a trampling down and a crushing of the mind, body and spirit.

Contrast that, says Paul, with something that is utterly free - it costs us nothing - because - here is the crunch - it cost Jesus Christ everything. Indeed in our Christian assertion that God was in Christ - even on the cross- it is then God who has been crucified, it is God who has died - not instead of us but because God has taken on all the pain, suffering and injustice of the world. Not as a payment, not because God must, but as an act of love. Love for the whole of creation. The love that calls us out of the self-destructive ways of being into a world of justice, cooperation and caring for neighbour just as we care for ourselves. It is the love that enables us to be free to live with the consequences of kindness and compassion, of hope and joy, of trust and forgiveness. The sort of world where tenderness to one another is natural. In fact the sort of world that we almost glimpsed in lockdown.
Yet how quickly have we been urged to give into our acquisitive desires and the clamour for 'normal lives', never mind the consequences of possibly more infections as we are seeing in other places now. The urge to jet off to other countries despite the consequences to the environment. Once again we feel ourselves sucked into the 'ways of the world' yet also feeling within our deepest selves that there must be a better way - there must be a way out of this cycle.

Yes says God - it is that free gift. The gift of my love for you and my love for the whole of creation. The gift you just receive. The gift that helps you to see things in a different way and in a different perspective. The free gift that offers real courage in the face of adversity, of real hope even in the darkest of situations, of real strength in the face of injustice and real love in the face of hatred. The free gift that says 'take a cup of cold water to revive you on your journey' for the lonely and weary we encounter.

But before we get too carried away we must remember that a cup of cold water was not so easily obtained in the time of Jesus. A trip needed to be made to the local well, the storage jars had to be kept out of the seering heat in the summer and kept free of ice in the winter. A cup of water was one thing - but a cup of 'cold water' something else again.

'There we are', I hear you say, 'no such thing as a free gift!'. May be not if you look at it through the transactional lens of the world. But viewed through the lens of happily offering the cup of cold water because God has instilled the love and compassion for one another into us and us knowing we can request the cup of water from someone else and they will also freely give it to you in need - then we do begin to understand something of what Paul was trying to say.

Back to my teenage camp, apparently, once the startled leader had regained her composure, she said 'no, no extra chores, no catch, no strings. What is inside this parcel is for you'. What happened then is the real story. The girl opened the parcel and saw three different books and turned around to the others and asked if anyone would like two of the books. Two other girls got up and accepted the free books. There was no compulsion to share - but the generosity was understood and passed on. The free gift of God that goes on giving - with no strings - but with a power to change us all.

PRAYERS

Gracious God, forgive us when we are always on the look out for the 'catch' in all that you offer us.
Forgive us our mistrust of you and your love that seems to 'be too good to be true' and thus our failing to love you with all of our heart and soul and mind, our failing to love our neighbours as we love ourselves and our failing to care for your creation.

Yet we hear your words of love and compassion to us. We hear your words of mercy and assurance 'our sins are forgiven' and we can begin to live our lives in the counter-cultural way of your Kingdom.

So we pray that your Kingdom may come in and through us as we pray for the world with all its greed, mistrust, violence and selfishness.

We pray for all those who suffer injustice both at the structural injustices in the world and those who are misused and abused by the power of others. We pray for the modern victims of slavery and human trafficking and we pray for those who work with the vulnerable, powerless and oppressed in the world.

We pray for those who have or seek power, may they fully comprehend the responsibility and consequences of the decisions they make. May they seek to work with integrity and fairness for all.
We pray for those who do not think through the consequences of their behaviour. Those who rely on substances or gambling, those who abuse others for their own ends, those who squander the resources of the natural world to feed their greed. We pray for the victims of such behaviours and those who work with victims and perpetrators.

We continue to pray for all those who have served and continue to serve us in our communities. As they move out of the headlines may we not forget them, may we continue to thank them and show our appreciation however and whenever we can.

As our society begins to unlock may we remain mindful of the frail and vulnerable and continue our praying and supporting in whatever way we can. The work of foodbanks and other charities will not have gone away so may we not only give of our money and time but also go on asking the searching questions regarding the structural inequality that exists.

We spend time in pray offering those situations, friends and families that we feel called to pray for...

Loving God, our prays will have been many and varied for you work in our individual lives to prompt our concerns. We thank you that you are a God who calls us into cooperation with you so that your will might be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

As you have given us bread for our journey and the water of life to quench our thirst for you may we go into this week as your disciples sharing the free gift of your love in our lives.

This we ask in and through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, AMEN

HYMN: 489: Be Thou my vision
tune: Slane, with Intro.

1 Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

2 Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
thou ever with me and I with thee, Lord;
Thou my great Father, thy child let me be;
Thou in me dwelling, and I one with Thee.

3 Be Thou my breastplate, my Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my strong power:
Raise Thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

4 Riches I heed not, nor earth's empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, the first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

5 High King of Heaven, Thou heaven's bright sun,
grant me its joys after vict'ry is won!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
Ancient Irish Poem tr M. Byrne and E Hull
